A lovely day in Wanaka

What a day! I decided to leave Queenstown and hitchhike. Somewhere. Ideally to Wanaka but I was ready to be taken anywhere nice depending where the drivers would go.

One ride into town, one ride out of town, and I was in a hitchhiking position. I was lucky. The third driver was going to Wanaka. The mountain road was open so I had an opportunity to see the beauty of the mountains and clouded valleys. Breathtaking.

Once I reached Wanaka I had time on my hands so I tried hitching a ride to Rob Roy’s glacier. One hour and no luck. I wanted to call it a day at 1 pm and just two minutes before that a car stopped. Two guys from Uruguay were headed in my direction. Yes. They weren’t going to the glacier which I didn’t mind.

So I ended up doing the Wanaka Glendhu Bay track and it was really good. No people almost the entire way. Just me and the big fat fluffy sheep and a couple of wild rabbits. A lot of fluffiness. A few people appeared closer to the town.

The weather was surprising. It was cloudy and cold in Wanaka and just 10 km out of town the weather was fantastic.

It was one of those days when I was carrying all my stuff all day because I was hoping to get a Yes reply on couchsurfing. It didn’t happen so I ended up in a hostel. I was really happy I was travelling light.
